MEET YOUR FARMERS
Fred and Amy have been farming together since they met in 2013 in Humboldt County, California. Nestled on the lush floodplain of the Eel River Valley between Humboldt Redwoods State Park and the Eel River, Luna Farm grows a diverse array of organic and dry-farmed fruits and vegetables nearly year-round.
Crops include seasonal favorites like apples, pears, peaches, figs, heirloom tomatoes, corn, squash, and melons, as well as Pacific Northwest winter staples like brassicas, carrots, onions, beets, and culinary herbs.Fred, originally from Germany, came from a farming family and began his farming journey in his 30s, gaining experience in Germany and South America before settling in Humboldt. Known locally as the “King of Kohlrabi,” Fred brings his passion for farming and cultural varietals to Luna Farm. Amy shares Fred’s love for the land, with a particular fascination for growing unique crops with historical significance, like Dragon’s Tongue flat beans and Fatalii peppers. Together, they are dedicated to feeding their community by providing fresh, nutrient-dense produce to local restaurants, chefs, grocery stores, schools, and food banks.
The farm’s beloved cat, Sylio, and dog, Captain, add a touch of humor and charm to the daily life on the farm, offering excellent mousing skills and plenty of laughs to all who visit.
Certified Organic
All of our produce is grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, and we’re proud to be certified organic by CCOF. We also participate in the Organic Seed Alliance, highlighting our commitment to crop diversity and soil sustainability in our watershed.
Every vegetable is started from seed by hand, either in the field or in our greenhouses. We fertilize the land using only chicken manure, agricultural lime, or cover crops, and rely primarily on groundwater and dry farming. Our carefully planned crop rotation allows fields to rest and rebuild soil fertility, meaning we cultivate twice as much land as needed. This approach helps us keep pests and diseases to a minimum, with soil health and water preservation at the core of everything we do.
Organically Dry-Farmed
We use organic methods and dry-farming techniques to conserve water and promote soil health.
Crop Diversity & Rotation
We grow a wide variety of seasonal crops and practice crop rotation to maintain soil fertility and prevent pests naturally.
Minimal Till
We minimize soil disturbance and use compost and cover crops to enrich the soil, reducing the need for harmful chemicals while leaving the land better than we found it.
